I used to rebuild a lot of engines and gearboxes.
Then movedon to developing injectors, making them work better and last longer.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake up early, have breakfast, usually fruit and fibre. I drive to work and get in early when it is quiet. I have coffee and check if any emails have come in overnight from around the world.
I then check our computer systems to see if any performance or durability tests have shut down and if so I try to work out why from the data.
Then my team come in and I pass out jobs to them based on plans or what has happened overnight. E.g. Look at data, make some graphs, inspect or test some parts. Then I have Teams calls with customers telling me how their tests are going and if they need any help.

We get a lot of returns where the injector is said to not be working properly, so I get the team to look at the data, test the injector if possible and then to take it apart and see if there is anything wrong.
This one came from a boat that wasn’t running smoothly, it did not pass our test and when we took it apart we found it to have dirty fuel in it.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would buy something broken (like and old engine) and take it to Schools to show them what can be done with things that look like old rubbish, alwasy better to make do and mend.
-
Education:
I went to School in Surrey and was good at science but not very good at maths so did not think I could be a scientist.
-
Qualifications:
I did not do very well at my GCSEs but good enough to just a take A-levels.
Again I did not do well at these but just managed to get to University.
I took an HND in Mechanical Engineering followed by a BSc in Automotive Engineering. Many years later I also did a Masters in Technology and Professional Engineering. After that I did a postgraduate diploma in Management and Leadership.
I am also Chartered with both the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Chartered Management Institute.
If I used them all I would have almost 40 letters after my name!
-
Work History:
When I was at University I had two part time jobs. I worked as a mechanic restoring old Triumph cars and I also worked as a Chef!
After University I had a few technician jobs, including working on classis cars, mainly Aston Martin but also Jaguar, Ferrari, Maserati and many more. Then I worked as a fuel injector deveopment engineer for many years. Working with all the world’s leading manufacturers on engines up to 18 litres!
