I am in my early 30’s and I recently moved to Glasgow. I have moved into the city from a seaside town. I spend my weeks at the University doing research and teaching, and I spend a few evenings a week working at a Pharmacy. At the weekends, I like to go long walks with Watson, go to see new films at the cinema, hang out with friends and play my switch! I like to read but I’ve also started listening to audiobooks while I work and walk my dog.

My Work:
For my research project, I use a magnetic device and very small magnets, called nanoparticles, to turn stem cells into bone cells. I also teach anatomy to future dentists and doctors 🦴🫁

I am fascinated by the human body, how it functions and how disease can affect our anatomy. I enjoyed learning about anatomy so much that I got an undergraduate degree in Anatomy! I am now a full time PhD student – where I study biomedical engineering and I work on a project using magnets to develop new bone tissue. My project will hopefully, one day help those with bone loss which may have occurred due to disease or injury. I also help teach anatomy to future dentists and doctors at the University of Glasgow. At the weekend I work in a pharmacy where I help local patients manage their health.

My Typical Day:
During the week, in the morning I walk my dog, then head to work. I will either be doing research or teaching throughout the day. A few evenings a week I work in a Pharmacy. I also try squeeze in a trip to the gym.

I start my day by walking my dog, then head into work. My work days are spent in a research lab or teaching my students, or both! If I’m doing research, I will be in the lab using a lot of different bits of equipment to measure changes to my hydrogels or cells after I’ve used the magnets on them. If I’m teaching, I’ll be in the anatomy building in a lab and helping students understand anatomy. We will look at an anatomical area or body system and study it for a block of time.
Then I’ll have lunch with friends at work and back into the research lab. I check my emails throughout the day. I’ll head home after work has finished and take my dog out another walk.
At the weekends, I like to keep busy and I will also visit family or go to the cinema.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won the prize money I would use it to develop teaching kits to take into local schools in Glasgow. The public primary schools in Glasgow don’t have a big budget for science teaching so I would like to develop kits to support the local teachers to add science to their curriculum with some fun activities.
